Born for the Trail

“I was born for the trail, not for the journey’s end.
We were born to discover and to build, for the others who will come after us.
They will live in a richer, sweeter land, but we will have made the trails.
We will ride far lands where the only companions are wind and rain and sun.”

Cowboys have: Independence of mind; Boldness of will to conquer any obstacle. This profound statement was made by one of Louis L’Amour’s cowboy characters, which epitomizes all cowboys in this author’s books.

What did they build? What did they discover?  Is today’s cowboy still discovering, still building?

Things are built from necessity. What do I need? What do I have? Let’s discover how to use what we have in a more useful way.

Connolly’s built their business from these premises. In 1912 people needed harnesses for their team of horses. In 2024 cowboys need hats, boots and saddles.  There is a purpose for everything a cowboy uses. Specifics might change, but basics are the same. As a western wear, tack and saddle shop how do we know what to offer our customers? We believe, no matter what product it is, the core of our business is centered around: quality, usefulness, and comfort.

Hats have changed to accommodate different lifestyles. Some just want shade. Some want fashion.  Most want the best they can get at a price they can afford.

Boots are the same way.  Some want fashion only. Some need them to weather the worst of conditions and constant wear and tear. Some use them for everything.

Over time, saddles have continued to be used in their normal way, but some features have been tweaked to accommodate new disciplines. Cowboys that ride everyday want quality, comfort, useability, and longevity. Other disciplines have specific needs: barrel racers need a lightweight saddle with quick reaction time. Steer Wrestlers need a saddle that is easy to get out of.

Cowboys discover what they need, by doing the stuff they do!

The word cowboy is generic indicating someone that rides a horse. Young, old, man, woman, or child doesn’t matter. What they ‘do’ matters! Even if they don’t ride a horse, some are cowboys at heart and that counts too!

Come visit Connolly Saddlery at 485 So 24th St West in Billings, Montana and let’s blaze some trails together!
